Lampshade Making intro Workshop with Kate Malfroy

Kate Malfroy is an experienced shade-maker with a passion for beautiful fabrics and rescuing old lampshades and furniture from landfill. She has run The Upholstery Workroom in her home studio in Jamberoo for many years, and loves nothing more than sharing her skills with keen learners. In this workshop students make a lampshade from scratch, using industry-standard materials and using professional techniques. This workshop is suitable for beginners – no experience necessary (min. age 15 years)

Tapered Lampshade Making Workshop with Kate Malfroy

Kate Malfroy is an experienced shade-maker with a passion for beautiful fabrics and rescuing old lampshades and furniture from landfill. She has run The Upholstery Workroom in her home studio in Jamberoo for many years, and loves nothing more than sharing her skills with keen learners. In this workshop students will learn how to make a tapered lampshade from scratch, using industry-standard materials and learning numerous tips and tricks of the trade!
This workshop is suitable for beginners – no experience necessary (min. age 15 years) – however tapered shades are a bit fiddlier than drum shades.

Textiles - Traditional Hitomezashi Stitching with Mary Taguchi

Delve into the traditional, beautiful and practical Japanese technique of Hitomezashi – a reflection of life in cold, harsh, isolated climates, utilising every piece of cloth.

Using well worn and remaindered indigo dyed Japanese cottons, learn to stitch pieces of fabric together in this truly traditional way. Share with Mary Taguchi her cultural knowledge of Japan and its textiles over two inspiring days as she guides you to create a scarf or an origamifold bag that is beautiful, durable, timeless.

Weaving with Susan Walker

Weaving and textiles have been at the heart of Sturt since 1941. Learn the mindful art of traditional weaving using table looms and selection of floor looms. Students start with a range of set projects to develop skills and experience before moving on to their own designs and projects. Sue Walker brings a wealth of experience as High School Deputy Principal, TAFE and university textile/design to her teaching. Sue is passionate about textile artistry, creating beautiful hand dyed yarns and fibres, or creating woven textiles for clothing and upholstery. Sue enjoys sharing her knowledge and experimenting with yarns, paper, wire, felted wools and silks.

Arm Knitting with Natalie Miller

Learn to arm knit a MONSTER knit blanket measuring approx 1.5m x 2.3m. Perfect to snuggle up with on the sofa or on your bed. You will learn how to hand felt the roving, cast on, cast off and knit stitch with your arms. Yes your arms…are the needles! Finally you will also be taught how to needle felt the joins. And guess what? You get to choose from many colours (subject to availability) if you book at least 2 months in advance of the workshop date.

Tapestry Weaving With Natalie Miller

Join Natalie Miller for a wonderful creative day learning about techniques in weaving and creating a tapestry based around her dream weaving project. A creatively infused day where you will experience a day of tapestry weaving on a small Ashford loom. Students will learn how to warp up onto a small timber loom (350 x 250mm) then create a wonderful weaving from hand dyed wools and roving with different weaving techniques.
